All,

I think everyone has summed up that they don't want to get rid of Sloops.
But the organizational level it takes to get the boats etc. is a bit
overwhelming for most programs. Kudos to Charlie for doing it this year and
Mike for the other years.

I'd like to suggest that we move to make sloops a match racing event and
here are the reasons:

Fewer supplied boats, for our district we could get the elims done with 4
boats and a few coach boats to hold waiting teams.

Exposure to pro racing as Brian mentioned sloops is a good lead in.

Sort of works with a discipline we already practice, some might say good
match racers are good team racers.

Spectator and fan friendly, our event against Cal brought over 500
spectators to St Francis.

Make it a ladder event and the winner goes on to the POW, Knickaboker or
Ficker...

We could even make it a womens championship if sucesful and really have a
path to the games!!

My thoughts,

Jay

I think we are trying to grow the sport of sailing. Limiting college
sailing to dinghies does not accomplish that goal. I think we need to
increase the opportunities for sailing rather then start to eliminate
regattas. I am very much against the proposal.

personally i'm a fan of the sloop national championship for many of
the same reasons andy said below (i.e. it gets that many more people
out on the water and able to race). there actually seems to be some
good momentum for people to consider becoming professional match
racers in certain parts of the world. i'd hate to see the ICSA stop
supporting the sloop championship when other parts of the world seem
to be beefing this aspect of the sport.

news flash: sailing is not the easiest sport to host championship
events :-) i don't think that's a good reason to cancel a national
championship (unless there are other reasons I'm not aware of here).
if people want an easier time hosting events, maybe we should switch
to juggling :-)

there are three types of iPhone users in this world: those who know
how to count, and those who don't.
thanks, bry
