~ Recently I got hold of a few CD-R discs. These discs have no markings
~ which would indicate a "top" or "bottom" - er, a recordable side or a
~ label side. There are two ID numbers on the discs which can only be
~ read from one side, although one is on the transparency next to the
~ inside hole.
~ Is there a way to tell which side goes up in the CD Writer, or does it
~ make any difference as long as it remains consistent? Both sides seem
~ to be equally reflective and I can discern no real refractive
~ difference
~ from side to side.
~ Any suggestions?

The CD-Rs I have that are the same way, all have a silver side, and a
blue-ish silver side. The silver side is usually the label side.
You can also refer to the numbers to identify the "label" side. You should
be able to read them normally.
Chances are, if you put them in "upside down" the CD drive will kick up a
window saying there are no CDs in the drive.
