Grab yourself a pre-recorded disc with a label on it.
look at the side that has no label on it. It has a similar "groove" pattern
between the outside edge and the center hole like that of the old 33 rpm
records.
That's the side that records the data / music etc.
If your new discs don't have that on either side, you may have received
unfinished blanks from the disc factory where a worker may have not paid
attention
to what he / she was packaging and I advise you to return them to the
store where you purchased them.
The only other way is try to record something on them which I suspect will
not work if it does not have the "groove" pattern as I mentioned above....
Also, all recordable cdr discs have labels on them for you to write on them.

Recently I got hold of a few CD-R discs. These discs have no markings
which would indicate a "top" or "bottom" - er, a recordable side or a
label side. There are two ID numbers on the discs which can only be
read from one side, although one is on the transparency next to the
inside hole.
Is there a way to tell which side goes up in the CD Writer, or does it
make any difference as long as it remains consistent? Both sides seem
to be equally reflective and I can discern no real refractive difference
from side to side.
Any suggestions?
