Peter from what I have heard, stay away from Olympus. I know
of several people who purchased them and all had focus
problems. Strange since they make such good 35mm cams.

Zoom functions are very limited on dig cams now, try and get
the most powerful zoom that you can, you never know when you
may need it. The digital zoom part is not of the best
quality.

Also DO NOT get a 'fixed focus' camera. This WILL NOT focus
on anything and are preset at the factory to give a
'compromise' in depth of field from only several feet to
infinity by using a very high # f stop (aperture) and extreme
wide angle lens. As for the lens angle in degrees; remember
that the human eye's aspect ratio is 46.5. Look for an auto
focus WITH MANUAL OVERRIDE. One that uses several different
focus 'zones' is good (using fuzzy logic). Look for macro
focus capability, so you can take close up shots.

Also look for override of all automatic functions like
backlighting, exposure, fill-in flash, etc. If a cam does
not have these and you are in some unusual lighting
situations, the pictures won't be that great. Many dig cams
only have a max shutter speed of 1/250. You want at least
1000th of a sec to 'stop' action shots.

An LCD screen is nice..look for one that will also show you
thumbnails of all images in the camera. One that will save
images in a native format of bmp is not good, since that will
really suck up the memory in no time at all.

Some connect via serial cable, some via USB, some via
dedicated docking station, etc. That's just a matter of
personal preference.

Some offer several seconds of audio recording as well as
video recording. This may be useful in your case.

Hello listers, I'm shopping for a digital camera presently so
I'm open to
anyone else's experiences and insight. I'm aiming for at
least a 3 mega
pixel for picture quality and storage options. Any input
would be so very
helpful. Thank you.
