I live in Vancouver BC CA and use Cable for my Internet connection, single
PC with Win98, no home networking. The ISP is Shaw@home which took over
Roger@home a few months ago. On May 3 a tech came to my house and replaced
the cable modem with a new one and advised me changing from static IP to
dynamic IP. My nightmare started. My browser (Netscape 4.77 in Win
98) cannot access any webpage, no email, no newgroups. I checked the IP
configuration no IP is assigned to me. when I used release and renew I got
an error saying "DHCP server unavailable to renew the adapter". With the
help of the tech support in Shaw@home. I did the following:

1. removed TCP/IP protocol in Win Networking and added again.
2. removed my NIC from device manager and added it again as new
hardware. so reinstalled the device drivers.
3. Physically remvoed the NIC and put in a spare slot.
4. power off the cable modem checked and swapped all connectors.
5. got a new NIC and installed in my PC, trying in different slot.

but get the same result "DHCP server unavailable" and cannot access the
Net.
Finally the new modem was suspected faulty. I am now waiting Shaw@home to
deliver another modem but it take a week.

Do you have any suggestion about this problem? Any advice and suggestion
is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your response.

Regards!!
