In the wee hour of 11:29 PM 6/6/01 -0400, Thomas Fisher bequeathed such
tales as these:
>When I say "two lines", I mean that you only have one line run from the main

>lines, like you would if you had a second phone line for phone calls. The
>one just doesn't have a dial tone. That is still a RJ-11 plug that the
>"modem" hooks into.
>Technically, they both run through the same line from the phone box to the
>Telco, but from the computer, to the box, the lines are two separate ones (I
>guess that's through the "buffer") . Some Telcos offer the choice to split
>the line inside the house, or outside. I think most recommend having it

>I'd love to have the speed you have up there. I have 1.1/128 (advertised).

The high speed DSL exists in the large cities, our Bell claims to want 85%
of all Canadians to be connected or have the high speed choice by the end
of 2002. Well since 85% of the population resides in large cities or
within 25 km of them they are correct. But for the rest of the populous
like myself who reside 30 km or more from anywhere this gets a little slow
(56k). There is high speed through satellite but it's one-way and you
still need a dial-in, and this route is very expensive, around
$100.00/month for the service plus the initial costs of the hardware. I'll
keep chugging at 56k I think.
