Hi all. Something odd started happening 2 days ago. My available RAM is disappearing. Appears I have a memory leak somewhere. This is a just formatted HD (IBM ATA100 75GXP) with win98, all patches and updates. RAM is 256mb CAS2 PC133 PNY Platinum on a Soyo SY-6BA+IV w/PIII 800e. Cards are; 3com internal PCI DSL modem, ESS Allegro 4 channel PCI sound card, ATI AIW 128 Pro 32mb AGP video card and a Promise ULTRA100 TX2 ATA 100 controller card. (Also 52x CDROM & Yamaha 16x10x40 LiteSpeed CDRW drive running Adaptec ECDC 4.03 and DCD 3.05).
There is nothing more running in the BG or starting @ bootup other than what I have had for years. Norton AV, Zone Alarm Pro, Cordless Logitech mouse executable (which gives custom mouse features) a CPU cooling program & very tiny program that gives the normal windows system tray clock day, date and month features (Tclockex). The latter 3 consume a negligible amount of ram and resources and disabling them only gives about 2mb more of available ram and 2% more available resources. Tclockex is what gives the RAM amount available and RAM load via mouse hover. Swap file is still set to 'let windows manage', I have yet to set that to what it usually is (2.5x the ram amount), but in the past I have run it both ways and never had this problem. @ bootup, as usual the 'memory LOAD' shows as only 24% and AMOUNT at 180mb (180,xxx k). The 'RESOURCES available' always show what they always have shown, a LOW 84% for some reason. This has always been the case even on other hard drives/formats. I have no other programs installed on this HD than I have always had installed on any other HD, in fact, much less since I have not had the time to load them all. Previously after a few hours of typical use, the memory load would typically be always less than 50% & RAM available at about 120mb even with 5+ webpages open, OE open, sending and receiving email, and maybe 3 apps in use plus the TV tuner on the ATI AIW. The load would usually be about 35-40% and even more RAM available with only a few apps going. Recently, after a few hours of use, I had noticed the mouse cursor 'dragging' when I would move it, sort of with some 'sticky hesitation' you might say. I checked the memory load and mem available and was shocked. The RAM was sucked up to where at times ZERO mb was available! Right now as I type, it is at only 7k available! During these times the 'load' will show 65-70%. I now have to either restart the PC after only a short period of time, or load and use resman.exe to reclaim and recover more RAM, then close it down after the memory restoration. I have heard of memory leaks before, but the only thing I have heard of causing them is a video card going bad. Any thoughts on what could be causing this please?
