Well....since this happened since a reformat, then checking
these settings in the BIOS would be of no help (unless you
are someone could have changed them). Hmm, all I can tell
you to do right of hand is to try and reinstall windows.
sounds like you just had a 'bad install'. After you
installed windows, did you install ALL of the SAME drivers
AND SAME software/programs, as well as all of the critical
updates/patches from the windows update site? Try using the
PC in safe mode (as much as you can I should say since you
can't get usually get online in safe mode). Disable all
items loading with windows and try using it like that; maybe
a program that is running in the BG is doing it. Sorry I
can't be of more help. I've never seen this and this is
what I would do if it happened to me.

Sorry, I'm using Win98 but have the power save mode off.
Moving the
mouse or hitting keys doesn't do anything. It actually
shuts off most
often when I go to a new web page but sometimes when I'm
typing an
email. So far I've always been connected to the internet
when it does
it and always am actually working on the machine.
Thanks, Cindy

What happens when you just move the mouse or hit a key? I
just sounds
like it's doing the normal thing and going into power save
mode, which
is 15 min by default in win98. Since you do not give your
OS type, I
can't say exactly what to do other going into display
properties then
the screen saver tab, next 'settings' then you'll see what
to do.

Subject: PCWorks: Strange Happenings

This week I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall
things,
looonnnggg story. Now periodically my monitor shuts off and
there is no
drive activity while I'm working (so far only while I'm on
the internet
but never doing the same thing). When I turn the monitor
off and then
back on it says there's no signal. Sometimes when I "Ctrl"
"Alt" "Del"
the machine will restart, sometimes it won't. When it
doesn't and I try
to turn it off with the power switch, nothing happens so I
have to shut
it off at the surge protector. What would be causing it to
do that. I
am running both an anti v*rus software which is current and
Zone alarm
and neither have told me of any v*rus or anything like that.
I've run
those two together for 6-8 months without any problems
before so I don't
think it's them. Yes, I have had my pc open this week so I
suppose I
could have loosened something and have checked that but I
don't see
anything amiss. It is intermittent and comes back up fine
when I
reboot. What could be causing this? TIA, Cindy Pavey
