I find that popup ads are more common than ever and are not necessarily the result of "call home" programs. I use a Popup Killer that works fine. You need to do some configuring such as setting the "smart" mode and may have to tell it some of the popups that you want killed. I seldom have one now that is not killed. Its not difficult to disable if you need for there are some popups that are part of a web page and you may want to see them before killing. Its called Popup Killer and is available at
