You didn't say what program you are using for email, but I know that my
netscape polls the ISP every ten minutes to auto download.  It does need
to be running, but can be minimized while polling and drawing down. I do
believe that there is the same function in Outlook/Outlook Express from
what some of my other list members have mentioned.
