I have not used GRUB so I can't verify this but at the GNU GRUB faq site http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-faq.en.html#q12 the only method for removing GRUB is what you have also described. Do you by chance have a dynamic drive overlay in use on this drive? If you do then this may hamper your efforts. Do you wish to retain the BSD and Linux partitions or can these be wiped? How much free space do you have across all your partitions?
