smtp.mindspring.com is the same as mail.mindspring.com
There is also a set of mail exchanger records for pop.mindspring.com
[gboyd] nslookup pop.mindspring.com
Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1
Name: pop.mindspring.com
Addresses: 207.69.200.16, 207.69.200.119, 207.69.200.78, 207.69.200.225
207.69.200.129, 207.69.200.29, 207.69.200.43, 207.69.200.184,
207.69.200.101
[gboyd] nslookup smtp.mindspring.com
Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1
Name: mail.mindspring.com
Addresses: 207.69.200.157, 207.69.200.226, 207.69.200.25, 207.69.200.57
207.69.200.60, 207.69.200.110, 207.69.200.246, 207.69.200.243,
207.69.200.148
Normally you set your sending and receiving mail server addresses
differently, that is, send using SMTP and receive using POP. If the ISP
only has one mailserver then the sending and recieving server are usually
the same name like mail.eskimo.com
Even through Earthlink absorbed Netcom and Mindspring, the
sending/recieving mailservers are still named for the original ISP. That
is, mail.earthlink.net (or pop.earthlink.net) and mail.mindspring.com (or
pop.mindspring.com). Don't confuse them.
