After looking at all these sites, I can understand why this subject alone
could drive someone up the (fire)wall, trying to figure out what to
use/which company to deal with.
After I took a closer look at OnTrack's package, at their web site, I
discovered that their NetDefense firewall is the same as Sygate
Technologies's Personal Firewall. This makes for an interesting situation
since it seems Sygate is one of the industry leaders in Firewalls and
security, both for a personal as well as enterprise basis. Seems their
personal version can be downloaded for free for personal use or is $19.95
for business use. The Pro version comes with or without upgrades for a
year, depending on what you might want to spend ($39.95 versus $47.95).
BUT, a couple of things hit me with just trying to get info about Sygate -
though they are one of the industry leaders, most sites such as CNET and
others dont have ANYTHING in their databases with regard to them at all.
This was a BIG shock, since many people would automatically assume that
CNET and other similar sites would be ones to go to for searching.for
detailed tech info. Yet when I used Google to do a search, first on
NetDefense and then on Sygate, boy did I get the web sites to go to, to get
info.
After reading the compare between ZoneAlarm and Tiny, boy did the writer
hit things on the head royally with regard to ZoneAlarm - they have one of
the WORST support systems in effect, as I personally found out. You just
cant end up talking to anyone at the company, even if you bought the Pro
version - the woman that answered the phone gave me I guess a standard pat
answer, of they ONLY deal with emails. And the email I got back from them
on what I originally posted on PCWorks was something else trying to fully
figure out. At least they do have a fairly well layed out web site.
The Firewall Guide Software Review I found most interesting since it did
have Sygate along with the biggies and not so bigs - this one was one I
think that would be most useful to pretty much anyone trying to figure out
what and where to go on the whole subject of firewalls - thanks MUCH for
this one.
