Ralph,
Speaking of a "bucket-of worms" this looks more
like a 55-gal drum of maggots. . .I'll wait!

Clint,

You might want to take a look at this URL at Microsoft's web site -
hopefully, it might give you a better idea of the whole NET philosophy of
Microsoft, and new development that Microsoft expects it's developers to
get into:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/

Until this latest version of the development software that
programmers/developers were using, such as Visual C++, Visual Basic, and so
forth, the programs were generally given version numbers, with the last
release of Visual Studio, and the components, being 6 (Visual Basic 6,
etc). With the new approach of Microsoft, the total package and each
component is now called NET. Hence, the package is Visual Studio NET, and
components are Visual Basic NET. Also, in light with this new approach,
Microsoft has developed a "new" language for this development - Visual C#.
So if you see any references to C#, with regard to computer development,
this is what is being refered to.

In a nutshell, just what is this ".NET"? I see it now at the
windows update site. Is this something we can all use, or
should we install it on our PC's? I tried to read about it,
but there was no quick and easy explanation/description for
it. Looks like from what I did gather from it, it is only
for PC's with a certain type of software on it. ?

Microsoft has a new runtime environment released to support
it's .NET
architecture:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/sample.asp?url=/msdn-file
s/027/001/829/msdncompositedoc.xml&frame=true
Typical MS, the code is bloating exponentially with this
package coming in
at 19.7 mb.
And there is already an update for it as well at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/downloads/sp1/download
.asp
