Sandy,

By defragging the swap file, and moving together, this is supposed to speed
up operations that windows performs when it needs to access the swap file.
If you do a compare between the defragger that comes with Windows and
Nortons, you end up seeing that windows will not put all the pieces of the
swap file together but, rather, just lets them sit on the drive where they
are found, and files are moved around it, while Nortons will actually move
all the pieces together in one location, and then groups types of files
together on the hard drive.

BUT, I am trying to figure out what you mean by moving to the end, since
when I use Speed Disk, it always seems to move to the start of everything -
if this is what you are referring to, then this is the normal state of
where Nortons put the swap file.

I take it you are using Win98, same as my system at home - after seeing
what Norton did on my system here at work with regard to Win2K (worked BUT
sure did things different than I was expecting, like in Win98, and sure
took a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to defrag and optimize), I got the latest
version of Diskeeper, which Microsoft licensed some of, to include with
Win2K, and that works GREAT for optimizing and defragging!!!!!

BUT I am MUCH more concerned with your system locking up - in the past, if
this happened on a regular basis, since it was not just Speed Disk that
ended up being effected but other utilities as well, I ended up
uninstalling SystemSuite/Utilities (depending on which you have obtained),
and then did a reinstall.

One thing I have found from previous experience with Speed Disk that can
help prevent this from happening, due to, apparently, the internal working
of the program, is to run the window's scandisk and defragger programs
first, and then run Disk Doctor then Speed Disk next. It seems that Speed
Disk, depending on how many folders and files you have on your system,
along with how much it has to defrag and optimize, can get overloaded with
its internal operations.

Sometimes the lockup problem can end up being caused from any number of
issues that end up happening over time within windows itself. For example,
several weeks ago (luckily I had done a complete system backup a couple of
days earlier when his system was working perfectly,) a friend's system I
was working on and installing some software for him decided to give me a
MAJOR set of headaches after the install and running them for a day. I
ended up completely wiping out his system (the problems got that bad and I
just could not figure out where they were coming from,) and reinstalling
everything from the backup I had done previously. After the restore, and
then again installing the software, the system worked perfectly and as it
totally should. The ONLY thing I can figure out is that somehow something
had gottern corrupted enough originally to cause all the problems I got,
but after the reinstall and the following, everything went as should, and
everything went great - one reason, for example, of why to do backups on a
regular basis.

Hi,
I have a question about the swap file. When I defrag with Norton it wants
to
move it to the end.

Also, after completing a defrag, my computer locks up and I have to
restart.

If anyone here has a suggestion, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,
Sandy
