I can't say about spamming, or what/how spammers get them and
to with them, all I am saying (which was in response to the
original post) is that google does index email addresses from
email list archives. Also I am only speaking of
www.freelists.org which is the 'hosts' for a list I'm an
admin for. You can enter [EMAIL PROTECTED]
@google and click to *repeat the search with the omitted
results included*, then on the next page scroll down a few
(past "freelist users") to [TechAssist]. Clicking any of
those will take you to our archives.

I guess I'm having a hard time explaining this circular
logic. If somebody
already knows your e-mail address and they type it into
Google then Google
will find web pages associated with that address. However, if
somebody is
looking for addresses to send spam to then I doubt they will
go to the
mail-archive, select a mailing list that is archived there
and then start
reading web page after web page trying to learn or get e-mail
addresses.

If a mailing list is not archived at mail archive then it is
more difficult
to search the archives of the list because you need to join
the list in
order to search the archives. This can also be changed if the
list is an
LISTSERV list and the web interface is activated. However,
not all LISTSERV
lists have a web interface. Likewise, Majordomo mailing lists
may have a
web interface but most don't. If the list is a web-based list
like Yahoo
groups then the same applies whether the list is closed or
public.

It is just too much work to try to harvest e-mail addresses
from mailing
lists, when USENET provides such a broad base of them.

Examples:
A search of Google on [EMAIL PROTECTED] turns up a measly 282
hits 2 of
which are the mail-archive. Hardly representative of the
volume of postings
I have done on this list, Help-Net or the Accmail list.

If I type "Gerald E. Boyd" (with quotes) into Google I see
some 820 hits.
Again the same 2 mail-archive hits appear. Most of the others
are all web
pages.

However, if I use Google groups advanced search and search on
author is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I get about 104 hits. Using my name
retrieves about 1800
hits.

So even though I have answered in excess of 8000 questions on
Help-Net,
Accmail and Pcworks, the bulk of my addresses are found in
USENET and web
pages, not mailing lists archives found on the web.
