You might be able to recover the data with CD Data Rescue from http://www.naltech.com/
I used this to recover a CDRW formatted in 'packet mode' and after writing a number of times, could not access the data. This was on my old machine. I still use a packet formatted disk, but with my new computer and new CDRW drive, I've not had any problems. It does have the the burn protection built in and seems to help with any burning operation.
