Oh, I doubt you'll be able to NW a USB modem. That's why I got rid of mine and got an Ethernet DSL modem. USB is going to really be pain, IF it can even be done. USB modems are also slower. I had nothing but problems with the USB DSL modems I tried. I'd see if I could get an Ethernet modem from your ISP instead of the USB. With an Ethernet, it's VERY simple. A NIC in each PC, both NIC's connect to a router, the router connects to the modem. After installing the NIC's drivers, the Network Neighborhood icon shows on the desktop (if it's not already there), and I've never had to change any settings in it, they are all set to 'auto detect'. Also, no drivers are needed for an Ethernet modem, and not even any additional windows software under "networking" has to be installed, and even a better point; you have a true "always on" connection, and NEVER have to connect to the net with an Ethernet. With a USB (at least in my cases), there are things you must click in order to connect, plus you must login every time.
You *might* be able to find a DSL router with USB connectors. If you're stuck with the USB, then maybe someone here has the NW'ing lowdown on them. It's not mandatory to use a router, but, if you don't, you need additional software running in the background, and I may be wrong but I don't think both PC's can be connected to the net at the same time w/o a router. A router IS the way to go, it's so simple, and fast. I use a DLink DI-704. With a router, you forget you even have a net connection and begin to take it for granted. I don't see how I ever got along without one before. -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The modem is a USB and is installed on Windows98SE. I need to connect it to my other computer running XP Home. The computers are about 25 feet apart. Would a direct connection using 2 NIC's do what I want, or should a router be used? Cheers, Alan Priol You need to post why kind of modem you have. Internal, external, USB, serial, Ethernet, etc., and also I see where someone asked what OS you're using. -Clint Having just setup an ADSL broadband connection I now need to connect another computer to use the connection. To do this, do I use a Router or a Hub to have simultaneous use? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Alan Priol ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
