I managed to get WIN 3.1 installed OK, with the exception of a few files.
Some FOT and BMP files it could not read. Also, msd.ini and win386.ps2 it could
not read.
When I restart, I still get the non-system disk. I can insert a win98 setup disk
to get the C:\ and type dir and see the windows folder. Also, right after setup, I
did see the windows come up before I had to restart.
Any ideas? WIN 3.1 was before my time.
Appears as though you lost the hidden system files, IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. Use the good startup and browse the C:\ drive for SYS.COM program. This is the program that you use to make a bootable floppy disk as well as a bootable hard drive. You can execute SYS.COM directly from the C: drive to reinstall both files. You also should make sure that COMMAND.COM is also in the root directory of C:. The Command interpreter as well as the hidden files are required to make a disk bootable.
You can also go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and make a bootable Win 3.x floppy disk. It will include the SYS.COM file and COMMAND.COM.
