Clint, This is the BIGGEST reasons that I advice people that are upgrading their 9x based systems to install Win2K or XP in a new partition and leave their 9x based system intact and do the dual boot thing. I absolutely HATE this whole compatability issue that keeps showing up when you try to run a program that was originally designed to run under Win9x and now try to run it under 2K or XP, and it ends up bombing out ROYALLY.
The biggest problem seems to be and always will remain real mode versus virtual mode, and accessability to the kernel. Many people think of primarily games with this issue. BUT I have found the problem to be MUCH more of an issue when it comes to utilities, since many want to go into a mode of operation that was no problem under 9x but impossible under the 2K engine. This also might give you an idea of what you found with Norton SystemWorks - if you were using 2003 under 9x, you would find you have a TON of utilities and functions available as you were previously used to when you were running your 9x system. Now you have XP and you find a whole lot less functions with SystemWorks - a LOT seems to be the whole base of how 2K/XP work and function, and so you have a lot less offered to you to work with in SystemWorks. The same I have found to be true with other utility packages as well. For example, for me, two of the most useful utiliities in SystemWorks has always been the Speed Disk utility to defrag your hard drive, as well as the one to optimize the registry, with 98 SE. When I went to install and run SW under 2K Pro, I could not believe what a dog (literally) Speed Disk was to use - it took an unbelievable time to get its act together before it could even defrag the hard drive, and then it sure did not leave it in any shape I was EVER expecting to see when it was done (MANY blank spaces were left on the hard drive). And the optimize registry function was NOT even available. BUT both functions were available and ran like a champ on my 98 SE system. I am wondering from the emails you have posted if this was an upgrade from your old 98 system to XP Pro, or was this a new system with XP the only OS that was installed from the start??? You might have mentioned this in the past and I could have very well missed it. If it was your old 98 system, I am wondering if you might think (as horrible as the idea might be after what you have run into) of starting over and reinstalling both 98 and then XP, each in its own partition, and have your system be dual boot capabable??? Then this type of problem you have run into with compatability and others would not be an issue, since you could boot into 98 to run stuff made for a 9x kernel, and into XP for stuff made to run in a 2K kernel.
