The two responses from others could be the reason for your problem. But to be sure, please let us know what the extension is. It is very possible, that the file could have been written in another program (something like MS Works), and you no longer have that program on the computer, or the extension is now opened in some other program that will not read the file the same, or has been "hijacked" by another program you have since installed.
You don't say what OS you use, but I'm going to assume you are on a Windows machine. If your system is not set up to show the extensions when browsing with Windows Explorer, just do a right mouse click on the file and choose properties. On the general tab, the first line should read: "Type of File: _____". Let us know what the file type is and maybe we can offer some other suggestions.
