It does get confusing. If you want to know a lot of information about your computer, you can download a small program from Belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html that will identify most of the hardware on your machine including the model number of your motherboard.
I don't think you ever gave a reason why you want to upgrade your bios. With bios the "if ain't broke don't fix it" approach is always the best way. So unless you have something specific you want to do with your computer that a bios upgrade will allow you to do, don't do it. The $60 thing is a whole different upgrade than just upgrading the bios version from your motherboard manufacturer and not something you should even consider. If you find the model number of your motherboard and then go to the gigabyte site that Clint mentioned you can look and see the changes for each version of the bios for your motherboard. The only change I know that might be useful would be the ability to use hard drives up the 40 GB.
