Karl pretty much echoed my sentiments, and the general consensus of McAfee, AND their so called "support".
A while back I tested about 12 top AV programs (except for McAfee). I never found one that worked as good as my old Norton v5 from 1998 as far as convenience and unloading! I could no longer use it on XP so I was forced to use another. Among them I tested; Norton 2001/02 & 03, NOD32, Kaspersky, Norman, AVG (his 3rd link), PCcillin, Panda, AntiVir (his 2nd link) and a few others that I can't recall. All of them will provide at least "decent" protection, but most of them failed some tests like the zipped virus/worm test and an infected sort of "text file" except for PCcillin and Kaspersky which passed. I went with PCcillin because I could not FULLY unload Kaspersky. One of my criteria was being able to FULLY UNLOAD the program by simply clicking it's icon in the system tray and 'exit' or 'unload', because I of course unload my AV software when running scandisk, defrag, or installing anything. The only way I could see to FULLY unload for example Norton was to restart the computer! That is totally unacceptable. NONE of them would actually *COMPLETELY* unload. With those that appeared to (that would remove the system tray icon), when you would cont-alt-del there would still be things associated with them running that were very difficult to shut down. PCcillin did unload the system tray icon and what remained in the cont-alt-del window was easily shut down. Their support is good, or at least they try, but they don't seem to be able to fix some problems. Mine was perfect up until the morons had an update that did not just update the definitions but also updated the program version. No one can ever leave well enough alone. Since that point I have been unable to automatically update it (says there is no internet connection when I click the "update" button). I now have to go to their #$%&[EMAIL PROTECTED] website every day to see if there are any updates, manually download it, and manually install it. I've reinstalled a bunch of times and still have the program right after that one dam' update! They don't know what's going on but I CAN'T be the only one this is happening to! No one here @PCworks was able to figure out the problem either. So I'm stuck with doing this ridiculous routine until someone comes out with better or same protection that *can be unloaded easily*. -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner Want to exchange links with us? http://OrpheusComputing.com ) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karl Springer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> On 14 Aug 2003 15:06 -0500, Dr. Rick Gillespie wrote, at least in part: > ... my McAfee software is driving me nuts. FWIW I've been using Norton AV for several years as a part of a Suite (got the original and upgrades at a good price). The only problem I've run into was related to uninstalling the older version prior to installing the later version; I ended up augmenting the 'normal' Windows' uninstall function with a special Symantec uninstall tool. If I had installed a stand alone Norton AV, I don't know if I would have had this problem. > I've also heard others rave about a free AV software that has > unlimited free updates. There are several free (for personal use) AV programs; some provider URLs (in alphabetical order): #1 http://www.avast.com/ #2 http://www.free-av.com/ #3 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php #4 http://www.vcatch.com/download.html While I have no personal experience with any of these programs, I've heard positive comments from users of #1 and #3.
