One thing you could try to do if you can't figure out how to save your address book and favorites is to import the address book into Outlook Express and the favorites into Internet Explorer and then save them from there. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer have import options under the File menu. You have to know where those Netscape files are located though. If you don't know, google can help. Have you looked for an export option in Netscape?
Doing a clean install on the old computer may make it run better than it does now. It "sort of" saves ram in that not as many programs are loading at start up. It didn't sound like that is your problem though. You don't want to pull the battery. That will reset your bios and that's not something you want to get into. You need to figure out where the stuff that you want don't ever want people to see is located on your old computer. Where the email files are, etc. When you are ready run the BCwipe program on those folders and then just format your hard drive. You really don't have to format once you run BCwipe on your data but from your description of how the old computer is running, your niece would be better off starting on a new install. One thing to consider is NOT installing Norton System Works on the new computer. Norton Anti-Vir* is fine but System works has been know to cause problems. XP runs so well, I'm not sure you need something like that. Others may have different opinions.
