I apologize for missing some important parts of my message.

I'm using Windows XP. I guess I have got an answer to my query, from a friend
in town, since I wrote to the group. He said that his CD burner does not
recognize all makes of blank CDs. Since my laptop recognizes these with no
problems, I think that is the problem. What do you think?

I used the XP burning software before, and Windows Media Player to make audio
CDs, and I think it is a Roxio program on my laptop. I ended up transferring
the files through my home network to the laptop, and burned them that way.
When I get the time, I'll try a different brand of cds and see if that makes a
difference. What a pain!

Thanks again!
Lori

Subject: Re: PCWorks: CD burning -Was: New Question

You're going to have to come up with better subject lines that
just "question" and "new question". It's obvious you have a
question or you would not be posting, right? Please take note
  of the new subject line.

You don't mention was OS you are using. Always state which one
you are using. You also don't state which CD burning programs
you are currently using. XP has software built in to write to
CDR's. Different CD burning software has different ways of
using it (especially XP's version), hence the need to know what
  you are currently using.

Thank you to Keith and Gerry for the answers to the thumbs.db
  question. Much
  appreciated.

  I have another query.

I have a cd burner on my computer. I've used it with several
  different
programs for making music CDs with no problem (all of the
  programs came with
my computer). And on my laptop I have a program that I can
  make data CDs.
None of the programs I have on my desktop seem to be able to
  make data disks.
Do I have to have a program? It seems to me like I do,
  because the computer
isn't reading that I have a blank CD in the drive. I want to
  back up some
larger folders onto CDs instead of zip, and am a little
  frustrated at not
  being able to.

Can anyone recommend a good, but value priced program?

  Thanks so much!

  Lori
