Group, on more than on occasion I've posted to this list about
XP's search problem, and if anyone knew how to fix it. Some
may have never noticed it, but with 40k+ of small files and
hundreds of folders I created it can be time consuming to find
a specific file. For some reason, when you search for a file
on XP Pro, (I don't know if "Home" is that was as well) it can
take 10 minutes or more to find anything! This is with the
indexing service on, or off. On '98 it was almost instant.
Several replied saying they noticed it as well but could not
find a fix for it.

A few days ago I saw the problem was wide spread enough for a
computer show on TechTV to mention it. They recommended a
program called X1 which is almost a miracle. http://www.x1.com
I'm not sure how it can do it, but it will search "on the fly"
for anything and will find it INSTANTLY. As you type, it will
actually start looking for the letters you are typing. So, if
you search for "search" for example and type s-e, it is already
displaying all files with "se" in them. By the time you've
fully typed "search" the results are already displayed. You
can right click the resultant files and "locate on disk", and
in the right area there is preview pane which tells you all
about the file. It can also search your email, history,
favorites, or the web.

It is actually free, but contrary to what they say, it is NOT
full featured and IS a demo. After 30 days the right preview
pane will no longer work. This should not be a problem since
you can still right click the files found and see their
properties by going to "locate on disk" and getting the
properties the regular way.

NOTE: One thing I've noticed about it is every time you start
it, it tries to send info back to the vendor....or somewhere.
There is no reason it should be doing this other than to tell
them what you are searching for. So, you should use a firewall
with it and deny access requests. I have done this, but I did
not disable the notification because for some reason if I
determine in the future it HAS to establish a web connection, I
can always grant it.
