I've found using a paid trojan protection program is cheaper
(in terms of aggravation and time spent). I use BOClean
which has lifetime updates. I also tried TDS-3 and liked it
a lot. They both are about the same price for the program
(around $40) but the lifetime free updates got my vote.

I am not certain the AV programs remove or protect against
many of the trojans. Someone will have to confirm that.
