Sound and video cause an enormous amount of problems, and Media Player is a
vastly bloated beast that can easilly be replaced. That said, I've never had
any problem with it. Any modern computer should be able handle it with ease.
There is a decent trouble-shooting app in Media Center that should solve
any problem you may encounter. See also the dxdiag app with Direct X.
I use Winamp and Viddi radio player almost exclusively for multimedia, and I
recommend them, although the radio player takes a bit of tweaking.
MS goes to enormous lengths to make sure these updates work, and they do,
for the most part. It's that "most part" that keeps forums like this in
business, so let us know any future problems you have with media player and
we'll probably be able to handle them.

I will comment that in general, I fully agree, HOWEVER, I have a Compaq
desktop running Win98SE, that was a blazing machine when I bought it about
1-1-2000. Shortly after that, M$ did some updates (which I accepted) which
had a disastrous effect on the computer. I did a reformat and started over,
being slow and selective about which updates I accepted. Windows Media
Player updates would automatically lock up the computer, and once I
identified that, I was able to uninstall and live with the thing. Over the
years I have tried several times to update the Media Player, and the result
is always the same.
