Dale, are you using the defrag utility built into windows? If you want something that is faster and more reliable then you should look at Diskeeper Lite http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207.

BTW, XP and win2k use a scaled down licensed version of the full Diskeeper defrag app. The full version adds in scheduling, and boot time defrag, etc.

Why do you run the online McAfee scanner as well as the AVG? AVG is already protecting your system, the slowdown may in fact be a conflict brought on by running these two app concurrently. It is a common occurrence in running similar apps of this nature concurrently.

No problem, but Im sorry, I was extremely annoyed, and tired seeing as
how I wrote that first thing in the morning and was in a hurry to get to
work.

I have AVG on my puter and I use the free McAfee but I have to get on
line to use it. It dl's first then I hit the "Scan" button and it runs.
Normally it'll take about 20 minutes (I think) to run through the whole C drive.
This time it took over 7 hours just to get through the first 4400 files.

I just had a puter techie friend of mine here and he looked at it
quickly and did all sorts of stuff to it, but it still hasn't helped. I still
can't run the spyware and it still takes nearly an hour to run defrag because it
goes in very small chuncks at a time and restarts about 40 or 50 times once
after each chunck. It took over 20 minutes to do the last 3% to 5%.
In a few minutes I'm going to TRY to run the McAfee again and go to
bed (if I have to) while it's running.
