Regarding "RoughDraft" you mentioned......FYI, unfortunately there's an issue with it. For one, it won't open unless you have the Print Spooler running. This is rather ridiculous. That service takes up a lot of memory and only needs to be running if you are printing something. I have mine set to "Manual" and it only comes on when I need to print something. "Manual" was not enough for this program and you have to set it to "Automatic" so it will be running in the background all the time. So if anyone tries it and gets the error message when trying to execute it, you have to go into "Services" and start the Print Spooler and put it to "Automatic".
I installed "WordWeb" and the "Dictionary" still doesn't work. It still says you "must install WordWeb" for the dictionary to work! "Spell check Word" appears to be really flaky and doesn't work all the time. "Spell check from cursor" works, but you have to move your cursor to the top of the text for everything to be spell checked. Looks like it would be a nice replacement for WordPad though since it does have some (limited) spell checker functions. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harold B" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello again, For a few years I was plagued by the fact that my quotes in MSWord and Notepad were not registering correctly in GeoCities' editor making the HTML tag inoperable. For example, a bar <hr size="4" width="50%"> would not show the dimensions correctly, as though there were no dimensions delineated. Our group was not able to address this problem. Well, listen-up ... the problem is curly quotes vs straight quotes. How I'm going to make all the changes on all the pages is another problem which *maybe* I'll work on now and then. What's most important is that I see the problem. And I discovered this after I downloaded a substitute for MSWord. The processor is called "RoughDraft" found at ... http://www.rsalsbury.co.uk/rd.htm ... For anyone interested, the blurb for it is as follows: QUOTE: Sometimes writing with a full-featured word processor like MS Word feels like hitting a nail with a jackhammer. Word is just too big and bloated for everyday use, with distracting features that specific users rarely need. Enter RoughDraft v2.11, a simple freeware word processor with writers of novels, short stories, articles, poetry, plays, and screenplays in mind. This text editor can manipulate text files and the universal Rich Text Format files (RTF). Being able to handle RTF files means that you can do simple formatting functions with your text with available fonts, colors, and indentations, just like you can in Windows Wordpad. But unlike Wordpad, this freeware gem even includes a fast spelling checker that can have an extended functionality if you download Word Web, a standalone freeware thesaurus. RoughDraft also enhances productivity by using Multiple Document Interface (MDI). This means that you can open about a hundred tabs in the same window. Speaking of productivity, RoughDraft can also import files in Word 6.0, Word 97, and HTML formats. This word processor also has a built-in side panel for a directory tree, find panel, and small utility called pad. This small pad can be used for reminders or maybe a plot for your story. CLOSE QUOTE I haven't used it for anything yet except in the Tools > Convert menu, I discovered the quotes problem. The processor is free (really called "donate ware"). Seeing a lot of interesting features on it, I'm recommending it to the group. QUESTION (anyone answering, I'm sure Marlene would appreciate omitting in the thread all that I wrote above) ... In MSWord 2000, how could I have changed curly quotes to straight quotes? ... Harold ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
