Sometimes the solution to one problem (or the answer to any one question), brings on a series of other questions. It so happens that the "default" file in my system is not zy6z31n1.default, but rather, 3rcyw2e6.default (Hugh mentioned earlier ky2x3ez2.default) ... and, as you say, found in C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. Earlier this week I finally did succeed in a full restore of Firefox and of course, boodmaks were backed up on my trusty flash drive.

I forgot about the "add-ons" you mention ... by that you probably mean the extensions and plugins found in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. It's not easy to understand the Windows filing system in that one would think that Firefox (or any of the many folders I have in "Application Data"), would be in one place; like in Program Files; that would make sense. Here in XP one has the same program all over the place.

I suppose the difference, your zy6z31n1, or my 3rcyw2e6, or Hugh's ky2x3ez2 doesn't matter, but what is strange is that using Search for Firefox (a thorough one that reaches into the deeper directories), that that particular Firefox folder does NOT show up. Neither does my 3rcyw2e6.default folder. Nor does *.default (asterisk, dot, default) bring up any such Firefox file. That was why I couldn't do a full re-install of Mozilla\Firefox; I didn't know about the one hiding in Application Data.

Although I still have questions, I'd say on one hand, everything is working fine on the computer. On the other hand, these little glitches are so puzzling. One moment you think you know something; next moment you realize you know nothing. Well, maybe not with you guys but certainly with me. --- Harold

Harold you have to backup your bookmarks and any other addons in your profile directory "C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zy6z31n1.default", yourname is your name on the computer and the number/letter combination is unique to your computer and user name after you uninstall. After backup you must delete the whole Firefox directory. Then reinstall Firefox. It's a bug in the installer wrapper that has never been resolved, unfortunately :(

How is this possible? I wanted to remove Firefox <clip>, and then re-install it. I deleted all references to Firefox with a search, and then to make sure, using RegSeeker, I removed all references to Firefox from the Registry. Now after re-installing Firefox (without any changes in the configurations), it is exactly how I had it before the deletions --- same bookmarks, same bookmark toolbar, and same homepage. <clip> Basic question is how is it possible that a totally new install gives me my original configurations? --- Harold
