I've used AVG for several years without a virus of any kind. I've installed it on many other computers, and they've never had a virus. It consistently gets high ratings.
Some speak highly of Avast, but I've only used it briefly.
Windows defender does a good job, and should be on every computer that uses the 'net, but you also need a second anti-spyware, so I use Ad Aware weekly, and have installed the immunize feature of Spybot.
I spend a lot of time on the web, and have no,none, nada problemas.
That said, I regularly help a young man who's fond of porn, and the other problems I see come from the cheezier online games. Use the above programs, keep your system updated, get your porn from newsgroups and stay away from no-name games and you'll be as safe as it's possible to be. AVG has a log (Test Center/Test Results) and a virus vault, so you can always check up on what it's been doing.

Hello again (using Win XP),

Following your discussion, now is the moment of decision and I'm faced with
Avg Free and Avast Free. I've been using Avg with no apparent harm to the
computer nor am I sure it does any good. It's just there in my sys tray
upgrading every once in a while and that's it. What's the consensus in the
group? Is it Avg or Avast? Or should I do neither and remove ZoneAlarm and as
Hugh once suggested, use Windows Defender to do the job of both? Right now I
have Avg, ZoneAlarm, Windows Defender, Ad-aware, and Spybot. In matters of
health, my computer is better protected than I am. --- Harold
