(1) Sometimes, depending on how the PDF was created, it has too much extra stuff in the background so what I do is to print the PDF right back to Distiller and that has worked well for me taking a 3.8 Mb PDF to 600kb.
The process of "refrying" a PDF (taking it back through Distiller) is MAJORLY frowned upon by Adobe, and should NOT be done due to the fact that PDFs are MUCH richer than Postscript...
