In Acrobat 6, the PDF-to-Word conversion works best if the document uses a fairly simple format, and was created as a "tagged" PDF using Acrobat 5 or 6.  So, Word-to-PDF-to-Word, all with Acrobat 6, will work well.  However, if you have an untagged PDF, Acrobat 6 runs the "Accessibility" plug-in to insert tags, with varying degrees of success depending on the document's formatting.  With more complicated documents (multiple columns or other complex layout), there's less chance of getting output that actually looks like the original file.

I just took a 15-page Word document and made a PDF file. Then I saved the PDF as a Word doc.
All three files look the same.
I used Acrobat 6.

When you make a html (html 4.01 with CSS 1.00) the Word text have a better quality (and weighs more) than the direct conversion from pdf to Word. Ruy Miranda

Why make an RTF file, when with Acrobat 6 you can save a Word document?

If you have Acrobat 5.0 or 6.0, you should be able to do this by going to File > Save As... and selecting "Rich Text Format" from the list of available file types.  This will create an RTF file you can open and edit in Word.

I have a document converted to .pdf from Word.  Since then, I have lost the original Word document.  I need to edit a line of text on the cover letter.  Is there a way I can either edit the text itself, or "white" it out somehow and insert new text over it so that I don't have to recreate the entire cover page?  It is a small amount of text.  I just need to change [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] K.
