Sorry, but I think this is bad advice. 1. This chap now has Acrobat 6. But starting with Acrobat 4, if you are going to press you should choose the PRESS QUALITY job options in Distiller. I'm not sure he said anything about newspapers which would accept a lower resolution file than high-end print jobs. 2. The main problem is the suggestion to Distill an EPS file. This is just plain hankering for trouble. Quark does not include fonts in its EPS files. The proper way to make a PDF with Quark 4.x and OS 9 or lower, is to print a PostScript file with the Acrobat Distiller PPD (Adobe Virtual Printer), then Distill it. In the Printer dialog box within the Quark print dialog you "must" force Quark to include the fonts in the PostScript stream. This is the "only" sure way of making sure the fonts are there for Distiller to use when Distilling the PDF. Trust me on this one. Before porting to InDesign, I made hundreds of PDFs from Quark, and have helped steer people away from thinking that distilling EPS files (from any program) is a good idea. For example, try distilling an EPS from a drawing program and see what you get. The EPS has no page information information, so if your EPS is 5 x 7 it will be floating on an 8.5 x 11 page within the PDF (by default). You can't add crop and bleed information, either. My two cents worth. Brad You need to go to a site www.digigate.co.za You can download the distiller settings for Press and Magazine work. Once you create an EPS from Quark, then you distill with the Distiller settings option on Newspaper. This setting from digigate will produce a X1a compliant PDF.
