I found out more information about the export/save function of Reader. It
was not easy to locate this information.

One can, in fact, save a certain Reader doc and/or export the data if the
author includes SPECIAL USAGE RIGHTS within a given PDF. There is additional
software: a forms server, client and Reader extensions required to do this.
The server alone costs $1,695.00...I could not find a price for the Reader
extensions.

If I understand this correctly, and I may not, if you purchase additional
software from Adobe you extend the funtionality of the PDF you are creating.
>From what I read, I don't think the user needs anything more than
Reader...it is the particular PDF with the built-in functionality that
allows the user to save the form or export the data.

The following information came from the Adobe website:

-----------------------------------------------------

AdobeR Document Server for ReaderR Extensions allows you to easily share
interactive, intelligent Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) documents with
external parties - without requiring those respondents to invest in costly
software. With Reader Extensions, you can extend your document-based
processes to the farthest reaches of your business, while accurately and
seamlessly capturing critical data from customers, partners, constituents,
or colleagues.

Activate hidden functionality within Adobe Reader

Enable any end user to save, fill in, annotate, sign and submit PDF
documents

  Streamline collaboration for document reviews

Automate data capture with electronic forms, enabling anyone to complete
and submit forms online or offline

-----------------------------------------------------

I don't have a problem with the theory behind this workflow, nor the idea
that if someone really wants to add additional functionality to the PDF,
they have to pay for it. But the processs of how it works is confusing. The
Acrobat manuals tell you that the PDF needs Special Usage Rights to enable
these features, but there are no instructions as to what to do about it.
When I searched on the Adobe website for information on Special Usage Rights
I came up empty, too.

So, I was part right, mostly wrong, and definitely without complete
information.

Melvin,

I stand corrected.

You are supposed to be able to "export" the data only, or print (and snail
mail or fax the form), but in my version of Reader 6.01, which I just
downloaded, the feature seemed to be missing.

This seems clunky, at best. The export feature is MIA from my Reader, and I
wonder how many small to medium-sized businesses are prepared to handle XML
data?

I was too elated that Adobe finally made the forms process accessible to
all. But sadly, the process is still a long way from being effective and
efficient.

Sorry Rich, but I believe you're mistaken on this one. I just tried it to
confirm with Reader 6.0.0.5 and here's what I get.

Is there some magic I've missed?
