That is usually caused by the use of an older and/or non-compliant RIP.
By all accounts, the person who supplied the copy had done everything correctly, ie. generating his pdf from the application he was using, yet his file still generated an error.
Because InDesign is a modern application and uses features of the PDF/PS specification that many RIP vendors had not ever implemented before. As such, those files fail on the RIPs.
Upgrade your RIP to the latest version, specifically checking about compatibility with CIDFonts and you'll be fine.
