OK thanks for all the suggestions about program hangs and crashes.

I confirm that the machine on which malfunction occurred far exceeded the
speed/HDD/RAM requirements stated for Reader on the specifications page.

I solved the problems of crashes and hangs by backlevelling to Reader 4 which
printed the file fine. The font problem may have recurred but it appears to
be innocuous. The crashes were killing me.

Aside from not crashing, Reader 4 also had another unusual behavior on which I'd
welcome comment. Reader 5 has two very annoying habits

1 From time I key Ctrl-P until print-time page opens about 15 seconds elapses.
2 From time I click OK (after inputting page selection) until screen appears
"Printing .... page" another 15 seconds elapses. During these two
intervals the machine is not responsive to other input.

However with Reader 4 response to Ctrl-P and OK is instantaneous. It
is a tremendous timesaver when printing out a 500 page manual in
batches of 20 pages.

In fact I much prefer the screen presentation and controls of Reader 3 and
use it whenever I can. However I have not yet installed it on this
temporary machine.

Font problem: Dov it is a 10 mb file. I can send it to you if you will advise
me off-list of an e-mail address that can take such a file.
Probably Canon should be told about it if the file is broken. We can
all probably learn something from this about what 'not to do'. (IIRC
there are problems cobbling files together generated in Word with TT fonts.
I always use PS fonts and never use Word so never have these
dificulties. Hope Adobe is proud of me :)

I verified the "braindead" Windows problem of not releasing memory: Reader
would behave differently depending on how long machine had been booted.
Win98SE was not releasing memory as it should have
