I just did the following:

- use TextEdit on OS/X
- enter 'shalom' in Hebrew
- make PDF by clicking on Preview in Print dialog
- search for 'shalom' (in Hebrew) in Preview -> word found
- next, save as a file from Preview
- open that file in Acrobat 6.0 Professional
- search for 'shalom' (in Hebrew) -> word not found
- use the text selection tool and copy the word from the PDF page
- turns out there is a blank between every character
- next, search for 'sh a l o m' -> word found

Looks like the direction is not the problem, but the way a PDF viewer
detects text varies.
