For what its worth, I recently traveled to Alaska with my 600 and used a
Tamrac 678 rolling photo backpack (its like a big rolling luggage bag that
you see at all the airports with collapsable handle and wheels along with
shoulder straps for carrying. I shipped my Gitzo Mountaineer (with much
concern) in a cardboard construction tube with luggage (a story by itself).
Be aware that the overhead storage space dimensions vary, while this pack
with lens will fit in a DC10 and 757 overhead (economy section only!) it
will not fit in the overhead of a DC 9 at all and had to be put in the
clothes closet after a discussion with the attendent.
In the field this arrangement wasn't very convenient at all, I didn't want
to leave the lens out of the case while traveling between shoots in a bus,
so I continually set it up, shot, then broke it down and returned it to the
case. What I observed were fellow photographers with 600 lenses using were
several large "conventional" lens carry cases with hand carry straps and
shoulder straps. These cases allow the lens to be carried with the camera
body attached and since the cases loaded from the top, it was a simple
matter of taking the lens out to shoot and returning it to the case when
done, without having to break it down. And the case, with its shoulder
straps sure made carrying the lens in the field a lot better than slinging
it over your shoulder. Upon my return, I bought a Kinesis L630 and it has
worked out just fine. I wouldn't recommend an Outpack case as I saw one come
apart in the field.
Hope this is of help.
