Guess so.
In a way this ties back quite well to a discussion we had a month or 2
ago about criticism of the pug, and was it worthwhile. It seems to me
that Versal Cross's comments are worth exactly as much as comments
such as 'brilliant, Gerry!'.
I don't know why people feel pleased to receive unsupported praise but
dismiss unsupported negative comment as the opinion of a crank.
If a someone looks at one of my pictures and says 'I like that photo'
without further comment, then their opinion is worthless to me. Same
applies if they say 'I don't like that photo', without further
comment.
A year or so ago I took some of my slides to a criticism session being
given by the RPS which was of great value. Particularly relevant to
the 'Apostle' photo were comments made by one of the evaluators about
somebody's portfolio of church interiors. The evaluator was able to say
exactly why the photos were successful or not. It had nothing really to
do with whether or not the evaluator *liked* them, or whether they
inspired some sort of emotion in him, but were related to technical
issues, and how successful the photos were in meeting the photographer's
intentions and the viewers' expectations.
Of course, this approach is open to some strong criticism, but it's surely
more useful than "terrible, Gerry", "great, Gerry", "it makes me feel warm
and fuzzy, Gerry" or "pass the sick bag, Gerry".
