I currently scan prints on my Umax 1220S scanner.

I would like to upgrade to a better scanner and the Epson 1640u seems like a
good one according to specs, especially as it comes with a built in
transparency hood.

Questions:

1 Am I better to scan the negative or a print which has already had
some enlargement?
In the past I would have said better resolution from scanning the
print, but this
relies on the printer adjusting the way I want, and I would like to
override that
        by scanning the neg myself.

2 Is this a reasonable neg scanner if anyone has used it? I want to
be able to scan
a 35mm negative, crop to say half the frame and still print decent
A4 prints.

3 Is there anywhere on the web which reviews scanners from a quality
rather than
features point of view? I find reviews from the computing
fraternity are not so
demanding as those from the photographic community.

Thanks in advance for any help...
