In my experience, you are better off scanning from the negative with a
dedicated film scanner than scanning an enlarged print. The film scanner
will be able to resolve a wider range of intensities (pardon my
terminology) than is possible on a print.

I have not used a flatbed w/ transparency hood so I can't comment on
that.

I had an HP Photosmart S20 for a few days. I was quite pleased with the
results. I could get it to work under NT 4.0 even though it is USB-only -
HP provides a special driver for NT. You might be able to find some good
deals on it now as it has been discontinued.

I'm thinking of getting either the Acer ScanWit 2720S (SCSI) or the new
Minolta Scan Dual II (USB).
