Hi! I've been reading the list for the past couple weeks and felt I should
reply to this post since I have found new information on scanners.
I recently purchased a fairly cheap scanner, a Plustek OpticPro 9636T which
has the transparency/negative function built into it. It is the only one in
it's price range that had this function, I only paid $100 Canadian for it.
As far as scanning prints, it is comparable to a run of the mill Umax home
scanner. BUT, for negatives, it leaves much to be desired.
Since I only need photos for the web,it will keep my costs down. I want to
process large amounts of film and I don't desire the prints (wish I could
afford digital right now). After much reading, I learned that one's best bet
for negative scanning is a dedicated film scanner, and better yet, one that
costs well over $500. If you want great results from a scanner, you have to
put up the cash. If you just want something quick and dirty, something like
the Plustek will do it...but not as well as scanning the prints. It made
perfect sense after I saw it in action....it takes me a while to get the
image right in PhotoShop...
Check out www.scantips.com , they have a small section on film scanners and
it may produce some answers for a buyer. There is also a table of film
scanners (don't know how old it is) located at
http://www.scantips.com/basic13f.html , and may help the buying process as
well.
As far as testing...well, I've had a hard time finding the same....go
figure.
That's what I know so far.
