Consider adding an achromatic close-up lense to a basic prime, if you have
one. The two element design is supposed to be very good. I haven't used one
(yet) but John Shaw mentions them favorably in his book on close-up nature
photography.

sizes, and approximate prices. B&H, Adorama, and many other places carry
them.
