Hi Shel,
You can select parts of a scene with the magic wand tool to adjust
contrast selectively. You'll have to tinker with the wand options to get
it to select as broad or narrow a tonal range as you wish. A setting of
70 will generally select a fairly wide area of similar color and tone. A
setting of 10 or 20, and the tool get's quite specific. If I was trying
to hold back contrast on a small area like thw white parts of the trees,
I might select all of these areas first. If you hold down the shift key
after your first selection, you can keep adding other areas to it. Once
I had isolated all the areas where I did not want to increase contrast,
I'd go to the select bar at the top of the screen and pull down
"inverse," That would select the rest of the picture, excluding the
areas I had selected. I could then increase contrast without pumping it
up in the areas I had chosen to exclude. It can be time consuming, but
it's not difficult.
