A good place to start is Anne's World Web Page Resources:
http://www.wwnet.net/~ahartman/

Two articles I found there that seem helpful are at

http://www.vtiscan.com/~rwb/gamma.html and

http://www.wpdfd.com/wpdtame.htm#gamma

If you are able to change the gamma settings of your monitor it should not
be too difficult to check - prepare the image in your graphics program, then
open it in an uncalibrated program with your calibration settings off.

If you can't change the settings it will be more difficult, but come to
think of it then your monitor will be pre-calibrated for the web in the
first place.

I did find a program called Powerstrip for Windows at
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm
which will do this and supports many/most graphics cards.

If you have a NVIDIA TNT card or better you're in luck - go to their website
and download their newest driver called Detonator 3. It will do the job.
