I hope you are right. I've been wondering the same thing, too.
You've got it backward, though - the maximum speed with regular
AA batteries should be higher that the speed using lithiums.
It's not just the F3 that had this dual speed feature - several
modern Canon & Nikon bodies only offer the maximum advance speed
when the camera is fitted with the battery booster pack.
There's even an example from the Pentax lineup - to get the full
speed from my Motor Drive MX I have to use the Battery Grip M -
using the rechargeable NiCad battery (if I owned one) limits me
to 3.5 fps, not the 5 I get using AA batteries (12 of them!).
