The Ni-Cd cells have a far higher maximum short circuit current (ie very low 
internal resistance[IR]) however as there are only 12 at a nominal 1.25v in the 
pack the terminal voltage is down by 3v over a set of 12 x AA alkaline cells. 
The drive sure would whir with 15 AA Ni-Cds however if you were going hard 
at it all day I suspect that the motor would eventually cook with the 
increased supply voltage (with very high current available).
