I actually just ordered and received a charger with two 2CR5 NiMH batteries.
I emailed with the manufacturer, and this was their reply:

The quirk of flash guns drawing enough current from NiCd batteries
to damage the flash unit does not apply here. While we know of
flash units being destroyed in this way, we have never heard of the
same happening to cameras. All I can say is we have many satisfied
Pentax users on our books.
However, we cannot guarantee your camera, only your satisfaction
and it goes without saying that you can return your purchase for a
'no questions asked' full refund if you have doubts.

When my current battery runs out I will give it a try. If my PZ-1 doesn't
survive I can convince my wife I did it to save money. So I really couldn't
avoid buying the MZ-S.
